Department of Communication
“If you’re not having fun in advertising, you're doing it wrong!” —Retired Assistant Professor Steve Shaner
Welcome to the wonderful world of advertising. Advertising provides a monetary stream to all of the other mass communication mediums in a strategic, creative and fun way! In our advertising program, students learn how to design, write and produce advertisements for every form of media.
Before any professional advertising practitioner creates an ad, there is a process of learning various factors of an ad’s success. Students in this program learn to market a product or service by identifying objectives of messages, targeting a specific audience, developing a creative and convincing story, and knowing which medium to use for best results. Students majoring in advertising learn how to be professional copywriters, slogan crafters, graphic designers and digital media production artists. Learn more about the program by viewing the major's required courses .
Jobs, publications and on-campus work opportunities
Students majoring in advertising have opportunities to create ads and media delivery for various business and organizations both on and off campus.
Pivot Creative Studio: Students also have the opportunity to be a staff member of our student-led communication agency called Pivot Creative Studio. Pivot executes the professional principles that students have learned through their previous years in the communication department to strategize and develop marketing communications for selected clients as if they were an ad agency. The students that work within this agency also get course credit for their participation.
Learning opportunities outside the classroom
Various classes in the advertising required course schedule make field trips to professional advertising agencies or production studios. During the annual trip to Chicago, advertising majors visit businesses and agencies like Ogilvy Advertising, Bader-Rutter, InMotion PR and Groupon. Students also visit production companies in Memphis and Little Rock such as Running Pony Productions and Soundscapes.
