About Harding Harding History Tour

The Holland-Waller Center hosts the Clifton L. Ganus Sr. Department of History and Political Science, the department of foreign languages and international studies, the ROTC program and the Swaid Institute for International Education, which includes Harding’s international study abroad programs, international student services, the China and East Asia program and the Walton International Scholarship Program.

The Swaid Institute for International Education

The Swaid Institute for International Education includes all international student programs involving nearly 250 students from other countries and more than 350 students who study abroad each year.

An accomplished businessman and community servant, Clifton L. Ganus Sr. served as chairman of the board of trustees from 1940-1954.

On the second floor, Outstanding Women of Faith are recognized for servant leadership in their professions, communities, churches and families.

A Tale of Two Grandmothers

Sue Locke Holland’s (1921-2005) joyful attitude despite enduring tragedy and her commitment to serving the Lord are legacies that continue today. She began teaching when she was only 16 and went on to receive a master’s degree in library science. She retired from Arkansas and Texas public school systems following a long career of Christian mission in the classroom. She and her husband, Wasson, valued Christian education and began a family tradition when they sent their two daughters, Suzanne and Karen, to Harding. She planned many church activities and outreach ministries. Her family is committed to following her example of steadfast faithfulness to the Lord and his church.

Joella Yurcho Waller (1915-1997) made significant sacrifices for Christian education, cheerfully sharing the Lord’s blessings with others. After her first husband passed away when their son, Larry Yurcho, was only one year old, the church became her family. She later married Rolf Waller and had two more children, Rodney and Anita. She had two top priorities: that her children would be faithful church-goers and that they would receive a Christian education. She set an excellent example for her family and the church through her service and generosity, a legacy her family continues today.
