What are Standardized Patients?
Individuals who are carefully recruited and trained to present the medical history, simulate the physical symptoms and show the emotions of the original patient upon whom their case was based.
Standardized Patient Program
By using SPs in medical education, students are provided an important role in the assessment portion of each student's medical training. Standardized Patients help mold future nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants and psychologists.
The Patient Skills Center has an ongoing process of hiring and training a diverse group of Standardized Patients (SPs). Our SPs encompass all ages, races, ethnic groups, religions, genders, etc. There is no acting or medical experience is required. A desire to be a participant in health care education, the ability to learn to consistently simulate patient cases and personal dependability are essential.
The ability to frequently practice and manage complex medical scenarios helps to prevent medical errors, while detailed feedback promotes discussion and re-enforces the learning process. Simulation is used to deliver quality patient care with integrity, consistency and confidence.
How to Apply
People from the community who are interested in contributing to the development of health care professionals may be chosen to work as SPs once faculty has selected a case for an event, and Standardized Patients are matched with the cases using with the cases using specific criteria such as age, gender, race, etc.
Each simulation is designed to be as realistic as possible to enhance the learning experience.
