Chemistry and Biochemistry

About

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Harding University offers competitive programs that prepare teachers, medical professionals, engineers and more. Whether you're interested in pursuing chemistry, biochemistry, biochemistry & molecular biology or the health professions (medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, dentistry, etc.), we hope you'll consider Harding University.

The faculty in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry are talented professionals dedicated to providing excellent instruction. In addition to teaching their classes and laboratories, the faculty provide special help review sessions, conduct field trips, and provide individual help when it is needed. They also direct student research projects and help students become more proficient science communicators. The faculty are also committed Christians who sincerely want their students to grow spiritually as they excel academically. Several regularly teach Sunday Bible classes or have Wednesday evening Bible studies in their homes. All are dedicated to teaching science within a Christian context.

Our chemistry program offers something truly distinctive: an education that brings together academic excellence, rigorous scientific training and a distinctly Christian worldview. While students receive the same strong foundation in chemistry expected at leading universities across the nation, they are also challenged to explore the discipline through the lens of their Christian faith. We believe that faith and science are not competing ways of understanding the world but complementary pursuits of truth. Our students are encouraged to ask difficult questions, think critically, conduct careful research and pursue scientific truth while considering what it means to use their knowledge in ways that honor God and serve others.

Our commitment to excellence extends well beyond the classroom. Students are held to high academic standards and graduate exceptionally well prepared for graduate and professional programs as well as careers in chemistry and related fields. Just as importantly, they develop the qualities that distinguish them as professionals and leaders: integrity, responsibility, perseverance, ethical decision-making, compassion, and a strong work ethic. Our graduates have earned a reputation for being capable, dependable, and exceptionally well prepared—qualities that make them highly valued by graduate programs, employers, and the communities they serve.

For students who want more than a chemistry degree, our program provides an opportunity to develop both a rigorous scientific mind and a mature Christian character. Here, students do not have to choose between pursuing scientific excellence and living out their faith. They can do both and graduate prepared not only to succeed in their chosen profession, but also to make a meaningful difference in the world. Our chemistry program is designed for students who want to pursue truth with excellence, serve others with purpose and use their scientific knowledge as an expression of their Christian calling.
