Student Media

Whether you're interested in production, journalism, photography or other forms of media, there are multiple ways to get involved. Students who volunteer or are hired for staff positions gain invaluable experience to apply to their future careers, as well as a solid portfolio to present to future employers.

HU16 is Harding University’s television station that telecasts on campus and streams our signal over the Internet 24/7 via streaming.harding.edu. We televise many Harding University sporting events. We also air a live weekday newscast, “Live at Five”, produced by students during the fall and spring semesters.

The station is under the direction of the Department of Communication in the College of Arts and Sciences. Noah Darnell is the director of HU16. Mark Prior is the manager of the studio facility located in the Reynolds building. Scholarship and paid student positions are available with HU16.

The Bison produces nine issues per semester. The publication, which wins state and national awards for its writing, reporting, design and photography every year, is the voice of the students and a training ground for journalism and mass communication majors. The Petit Jean is Harding University's award-winning yearbook. It is named after Petit Jean Mountain in Morrilton, Ark., where Harding College resided until it moved to Searcy in 1934. The book has won numerous state and national awards, including a Gold Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in 2004, the highest honor a college yearbook can receive.

Digital Archives

The Brackett Library has digitally archived the Petit Jean yearbooks, starting with the 1924-25 Harding College Petit Jean and ending with the 2010 book.

An auxiliary arm of the Department of Communication, VideoWorks records, produces and distributes video content for the University. Established in 2003, VideoWorks regularly films and produces creative packages of:

  • Conferences
  • Show and performances
  • Graduations
  • Sporting events, including team-highlight videos

VideoWorks will work closely with you on pre-production, which usually prevents major problems that can occur on production day. AM 1660 is a low-power AM radio that serves as a sister station for Harding's full-power commercial FM station KVHU 95.3.

AM 1660 is designed as training station for beginning announcers. Its broadcast coverage area is largely confined to the campus.

KVHU 95.3, "The Voice of Harding University," is a commercial FM station serving Central Arkansas with an eclectic mix of classic hits from various genres and generations. KVHU is the home for live coverage of Harding Academy football, and Harding University football and basketball.

KVHU has a 50-60 mile range, reaching a potential audience of more than 250,000 people in more than 100 towns and cities in more than 10 Central Arkansas counties.

KVHU can be heard worldwide on the Internet at kvhu.harding.edu and on most cell phone radio applications.

KVHU's announcing staff largely consists of Harding University students. During a typical semester, more than 30 students serve as announcers for KVHU.

KVHU's unique programming targets a mature, professional and affluent audience.

KVHU History

Harding’s first involvement in radio came in the 1940s when the college acquired WHBQ in Memphis. The station was used to help recruit students and raise money. The station was sold to RKO General in 1956.

Live campus radio transmission began November 16, 1964 when KHCA 720 AM began closed circuit carrier current transmission from studios in the basement of the Bible building. The carrier current system sent audio signals through the electrical wiring of the campus.

KHCA moved to the basement of the Ganus building in 1973.

KHCA moved to the second floor of the Reynolds Center in 1998 and provided background audio for the university’s TV16 cable channel.

AM1660 went on the air July 28, 2006 as a low-power noncommercial AM service for the campus. The station’s coverage area is largely confined to the campus.

KVHU-FM 95.3 went on the air August 18, 2006 as a commercial FM station serving central Arkansas. The station, owned by Flinn Broadcasting in Memphis, is licensed to Judsonia and has a coverage area of more than 50 miles, reaching more than 10 counties, 100 town/cities, and a potential audience of more than 250,000 people.

Students produce over 150 sporting events on campus each season. Students fill positions such as directing, producing, camera operators, editing, and provide on camera reporting and commentary on various Harding sports events. Games are carried on HU16 and streamed at streaming.harding.edu. In addition to live sports events, students produce programs like Midnight Madness and Harding Football with Paul Simmons.
