Why study computer science at Harding?

A growing field

Software developers and software engineers are in high demand with the projection of available jobs far exceeding the projection of available graduates.

Programming team

The competitive programming team gives talented students an opportunity to showcase their rapid problem-solving ability under immense time pressure. Teams must solve several problems within a time limit by writing programs to compute the solution.

International Collegiate Programming Contest

Each fall, the department participates in the International Collegiate Programming Contest, a five-state regional contest, competing with nearly 140 teams, with the potential to advance to the international finals.

What can you do with a degree in computer science?

Software development

A software developer designs, codes and tests software applications and systems to solve specific problems or meet business needs. They work across industries such as technology, finance, health care, e-commerce, gaming, automotive, telecommunications, aerospace, education and government to develop innovative solutions and improve operational efficiency.

Software engineering

Software engineers design, develop and maintain applications and systems leveraging programming languages and technologies to solve complex problems. They collaborate with teams to innovate, code and test software solutions, ensuring efficiency, reliability and scalability in diverse industries including health care, education, government, technology and more.

Web development

With a degree in computer science, you may either focus on the user experience of a website — creating engaging interfaces and utilizing design tools to create a visual appeal — or you may choose to focus on the back-end development managing databases and ensuring the optimal performance and security of applications.

OUR DEPARTMENT EMPOWERS STUDENTS TO SHAPE THE FUTURE. THE U.S. BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS PROJECTS THAT IN THE NEXT DECADE 66% OF STEM JOBS WILL BE IN COMPUTING.
