Foreign Languages Undergraduate Programs

Foreign Language and Missions Major (FLMI), Bachelor of Arts Degree

The Foreign Language and Missions degree speaks to the heart of Harding's goals since it integrates faith and a passion for Christian service with an understanding of the foreign language skills needed to accomplish His mission in the world, as well as produce the advanced foreign language proficiency needed in today's global society. The degree includes cross-disciplinary studies in foreign language and in missions and Bible. An internship is required for this degree.

 

French Major (FR), Bachelor of Arts Degree

Students pursuing a B.A. degree in French must complete 38 hours in French, including FREN 4510 (Senior Seminar, 2 hour) and 26 upper-level hours. Students planning to do graduate work in French are encouraged to take additional hours of upper-level courses in the language.

 

Spanish Major (SP), Bachelor of Arts Degree

Students who wish to pursue a B.A. degree in Spanish must complete 38 hours in Spanish, including SPAN 4510 (Senior Seminar, 2 hour) and 26 upper-level hours. Students planning to do graduate work in Spanish are encouraged to take additional hours of upper-level courses in the language.

 

Applied French Major (FRA), Second Major Only

Students who are planning a double major in French and a field that terminates in a degree other than a B.A. should choose the Applied French major. This "second major" may attach to any degree plan and therefore eliminate the need for completing 160 hours in order to double major with a science or business field. This degree emphasizes the language skills needed to function in a competitive job market where bilingual and translation skills are in high demand. This major requires at least 32 hours in French, including 20 upper-level hours of which 8 must be 4000-level. Certain other courses are required.

 

Applied Spanish Major (SPA), Second Major Only

Students who are planning a double major in Spanish and a field that terminates in a degree other than a B.A. should choose the Applied Spanish major. This “second major” may attach to any degree plan and therefore eliminate the need for completing 160 hours in order to double major with a science or business field. This degree emphasizes the language skills needed to function in a competitive job market where bilingual and translation skills are in high demand. This major requires at least 32 hours in Spanish, including SPAN 4510 (Senior Seminar, 2 hour) and 20 upper-level hours. Certain other courses are required.

 

French Major with teacher Licensure (FRE), Bachelor of Arts Degree

Students who want to pursue a teaching career in French must complete the appropriate requirements in the College of Education and 33 hours in French, including FREN 4520 (Senior Seminar, 2 credits) and 21 upper-level hours. Students planning to do graduate work in French are encouraged to take additional hours of upper-level courses in the language.

 

Spanish major with teacher Licensure (SPE), Bachelor of Arts Degree

Students who want to pursue a teaching career in Spanish must complete the appropriate requirements in the College of Education and 33 hours in Spanish, including SPAN 4520 (Senior Seminar, 2 credits) and 21 upper-level hours. Students planning to do graduate work in Spanish are encouraged to take additional hours of upper-level courses in the language.

 

International Studies Major (INST), Bachelor of Arts Degree

The International Studies degree includes cross-disciplinary studies foreign language, cross-cultural communication, world geography, world politics/economics, culture/civilization, and global issues. Both study abroad and an individual senior project are required for this degree. Students must also pursue a career concentration, which may be in any discipline that relates to international living and/or work. Courses must by jointly approved by the chairman of the Department of Foreign Languages and International Studies and the chairman or dean of the selected discipline.
