Phi Alpha Theta is an international honor society founded in 1921 to foster excellence in the study of history. With nearly chapters across the globe and over 400,000 members, the society is committed to promoting research, effective teaching, publication, and the sharing of knowledge among historians. Membership is based on academic achievement and a passion for history, providing opportunities for students to engage in meaningful historical discussions, participate in conferences, and collaborate on scholarly work. Phi Alpha Theta also serves as a valuable professional network for budding historians, offering a range of opportunities for intellectual growth and career development.

The Eta Phi chapter at Harding University has exemplified the core values of Phi Alpha Theta since its inception, consistently demonstrating excellence in the field of history. The chapter has been nationally recognized, winning the prestigious National Best Chapter Award eleven times since 2009. Through a variety of activities—such as research presentations, lectures, and discussions—the Eta Phi chapter encourages both scholarly and community engagement. It offers students the chance to work closely with faculty members, attend regional and national conferences, and contribute to the advancement of historical study. This thriving chapter continues to be a source of academic inspiration and achievement within Harding University’s Department of History and Political Science and beyond.
