Design and production at Harding

This major is for students looking for careers in professional, educational and community theatre design and production. The degree offers four distinct concentration areas for study: set design, costume design, production and light/sound. This degree provides the path of professional preparation for students who choose to play their role off stage.

Theatre at Harding University is about creating a collaborative community on an artistic mission. The art of theatre integrates actor, audience, story and space into an immersive experience. It is a reflection of who we are and what we might become. There is more live theatre being produced today than ever before in history. When you add the opportunities in media and the entertainment industry, the world really is your stage. The process of building a life in the theatre begins with discovering what role you are best suited to play. At Harding, you will be able to develop your art and your craft in the classroom, in the shop and on the stage. You will be guided in this process by a talented faculty and staff who strive to model Christian values and vision in their own art every day.

Why study design/production at Harding?

Real experience

The department presents an average of seven fully staged productions each year. Live theatre at Harding University is a year-round production environment. Opportunities to develop as a performer, designer or technician are constant with a wide range of styles including musical theatre, Greek tragedies, Shakespeare, commedia dell’arte, American classics and contemporary works.

Community involvement

More than 36,000 patrons see Harding University theatre productions every season. Student involvement begins during your first semester and continues as you progress through the program. Productions include the Homecoming musical, Spring Sing musical revue and Searcy Summer Dinner Theatre.

Improvisation

Improvisational skills are encouraged through the Pied Pipers, our children’s theatre troupe. This group performs more than 60 times every year, visiting elementary schools, pre-schools, churches, children’s hospitals, theatre workshops and more.
